About the project

COPERNICEA

The objective of the project is to provide the six countries concerned with their own autonomous and operational system through the development of methods, tools, and skills, as well as the organization of the production of ecosystem accounts for natural capital. This system will enable the rapid development of an initial ecosystem accounting of natural capital, first in biophysical terms in accordance with the CECN-TDR methodology, and then in socio-economic terms, in order to master the methodology while identifying the major trends and changes.

Implementation of a new accounting tool to complement national accounting.

Collection and analysis of satellite imagery to characterize land use and the condition of ecosystems
Strengthening capacities in ecosystem accounting, including the biophysical and socio-economic accounting of natural capital.
Establishment of a national and regional network for sharing and exchanging information and data.
AfrikEnca

General overview of the platform, objectives, and new features.

The AfrikEnca platform is a central tool developed by the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) to support the implementation of Ecosystem Accounting for Natural Capital (CECN) in Africa. It aims to make the data and results generated by CECN accessible, understandable, and usable at both national and regional levels, in order to promote their integration into public policies and sustainable development strategies.

AfrikEnca aims to

Strengthen

access to reliable environmental data for decision-making;

Enhance

the value and visibility of the results of CECN-related work in partner countries;

Provide

Provide a dedicated space for sharing tools, resources, and experiences related to natural capital accounting;

Facilitate

the dissemination and understanding of ecosystem accounts.

Among the main innovations of the platform:

What is the EANC?

Ecosystem Accounting for Natural Capital

The CECN (Natural Capital Ecosystem Accounts) is a tool that enables the measurement and monitoring of the state of ecosystems and natural resources in a country or region. It provides data on ecosystem services, their economic value, and their evolution over time, in order to support decision-making, sustainable planning, and the monitoring of environmental policies.
